Points Leader Focused for Season Finale
CONCORD, NC (November 13, 2006) Todd Bodine and his Germain Racing team have stayed with their game plan throughout this race season. For every race weekend, they show up to win. If winning isn't an option, they go for the best finish possible. This simple strategy has put the driver of the Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra up front in the championship standings and has kept him there since his April win in race five at Gateway International Raceway. The team and driver will stick to what works in the season finale Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend.
"We're gonna go there with the intent to win, to run up front and just win the race. If it's not a truck that can win, we'll try to get us a top-five just like we did at Phoenix," said Bodine, the youngest Bodine brother who could also be the first Bodine to bring home a national NASCAR championship. "It's been the way we've gone into every race this season, so we aren't going to change the way we do things at Homestead."
Bodine admits that while his approach to the finale remains in-line with the way he and his team approached every race this season, it is a different feeling knowing that his finish is important to his championship points standings.
"It feels different in the fact that we know what we've gotta do we've gotta finish 28th or better," said Bodine. "Unfortunately that's the reality of points racing and what you have to do to win the points. Johnny has to go out and win the race and hope that we have problems."
While this could be the first championship win for the Germain's and the Bodine's, this could be the second win for the Hillman's. Mike Hillman, Sr., Germain Racing's general manager, won a NASCAR Busch Series championship with driver Tommy Ellis in 1988.
"I was actually still in New England racing when Mike Hillman and Tommy Ellis won that championship. To win any championship is an accomplishment no matter what day and age it is," said Bodine. "Mike's obviously been there before. It would be nice to have father and son both get championships about as nice as it would be to finally bring a NASCAR championship into the Bodine and Germain families."
Notes and Quotes on Homestead-Miami Speedway:
Strategy for the finale…
"We're gonna go there with the intent to win, to run up front and just win the race. If it's not a truck that can win, we'll try to get us a top-five just like we did at Phoenix. It's been the way we've gone into every race this season, so we aren't going to change the way we do things at Homestead."
On "points racing"…
"It feels different in the fact that we know what we've gotta do we've gotta finish 28th or better. Unfortunately that's the reality of points racing and what you have to do to win the points. Johnny has to go out and win the race and hope that we have problems."
Racing each race…
"You've gotta go into each race thinking that, and that's how you win the championships. You've gottta know that if you don't have a truck that can win the race, you've gotta get the best finish you can with it."
On Hillman's bid for a second championship:
"I was actually still in New England racing when Mike Hillman and Tommy Ellis won that championship. To win any championship is an accomplishment no matter what day and age it is. Mike's obviously been there before. It would be nice to have father and son both get championships about as nice as it would be to finally bring a NASCAR championship into the Bodine and Germain families."
