Ken Schrader Homestead-Miami Race Advance
KEN SCHRADER ON HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY: "THE TRACK IS GOOD. THEY'RE RUNNING ALL OVER IT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM."
Ken Schrader, driver of the #21 Little Debbie/Motorcraft/U.S. Air Force Ford Fusion, paid a visit to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on his way to Phoenix last week. Going into the final race of the 2006 season, Ken talks about that, and answers his fan's questions concerning the Homestead track, wrecked race cars and NASCAR's dyno tests in addition to a couple on 2007 and riding his motorcycle.
What did you think of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base?
"It's amazing how many planes there are there. They've got 2600 acres of planes. It was cool. They gave us a trick tour. It was just really neat. They use a lot of parts off those planes. There is some really old stuff there too."
How did your Homestead test go?
"The test went good."
What is the condition of the track? How's the grip on the surface?
"The track is good. They're running all over it from top to bottom. It's going to be good. Goodyear has an excellent tire, and it ought to be a good race. Homestead has always been good. With the banking it was good the first race, and now it is better yet."
Will you be able to test the Car of Tomorrow before 2007?
"I don't believe we are going to get to test the Car of Tomorrow before the New Year."
Will you be driving in Busch in '07?
"I don't know about driving Busch in '07. I didn't know last year at this time I would be doing any Busch races this year. It's not a big concern."
What happens to race cars that get wrecked?
"You either fix them or throw them away or make them into a show car. It just depends on how bad they are wrecked. Sometimes someone will buy them for something."
Why does NASCAR do Dyno testing on select cars?
"Just to keep track of where the manufacturers and engine builders are as far as a number and seeing if somebody is getting way ahead. Everybody kind of likes that because you know where you are."
You ride your motorcycle a lot. Are you concerned about possible mishaps?
"Nah. If I was concerned about mishaps, I wouldn't be in this darn business."
